Male Luna and Female Antain?

 If the main characters were of opposite sex, the story would need to take some different paths to reach where it ends up. Luna being a male would change the story, but I don't feel it would change that characters arc tremendously. There would definitely be some changes, possibly things like behavior or the relationship between Luna and Xan (would they be as close to start if they were of opposite sex?). However, I feel much of Luna's character could translate directly to a male version. A male version would still need to have their magic suppressed and could go through many of the same experiences that female Luna goes through. I feel the larger change in the story would come from Antain being a Female. The main change would be Antain likely couldn't have been a member of the council for the beginning part of the story. While I don't remember it explicitly stating the council only allowed men, it seemed as though the council was comprised exclusively of men. If a female Antain did not have the experience while in the council, the character may have turned out very different. A female Antain would still want to defeat the which to get her child back, but the plot line up to that point would probably need to take a different route. After the characters collide and they realize they need to defeat the sorrow eater, the sex's of the characters seem less relevant. From that point onward I think the main characters could swap sex's and the story wouldn't be greatly effected.

Brown Girl Dreaming: The Movie

 The idea of turning books into movies or tv series always intrigues me. After reading Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, I began to think about how this story could be transferred into a TV show or movie. Personally, I think this story would make a better movie than TV show. The book is made up of many short verses that tell the overall story of Jacqueline Woodson growing up and finding herself as a writer. I think the nature of the verses and the stories told would make it difficult to make a TV series out of the book. The verses are short and would be challenging to turn into TV episodes. I think the story would be much better suited as a movie. The story could be depicted in a similar style to the movie "42" which is about Jackie Robinson and tells his story from the early stages of the civil rights movement. Final Blog

       1.       I disagree with the statements made against children’s and young adult literature. The two I agree with most are “No one around here knows anything about it. If it was really worth knowing, we’d have heard about it.”, and “Children’s and young adult literature has no permanence. Something is popular today and something else is tomorrow.” In my opinion, both of these arguments are very flawed. Every great book was once unknown to the masses at some point. The great books used in classrooms across the country all had to be introduced to teachers, school boards, and administrators at some point.   The Graveyard Book   by Neil Gaiman can be the next great book introduced to our school’s curriculum. The book is a Newberry Medal winner with a great plot, numerous exciting characters, and many of the literary elements that should be taught to students.
