Does the title tell the truth?
The title Brown Girl Dreaming indicates to the reader that the story will likely be about an African-American girl and her goals or aspirations. The world Girl is also an interesting part of the title. To me, the world Girl implies that the story will be about a child or the main characters childhood. If the title were to be Brown Woman Dreaming, I would have thought the story would be about an older main character in her late teen or adult years. Through the first half of the book, I think the title gives an accurate view into what the story will generally be about. The book so far has been about a young African-American girl and some of the moments in her life. Jacqueline Woodson has mentioned some of her dreams so far, but they have not seemed to be the focus so far. She talks about wanting to be in the classroom for things such as birthday treats or the Pledge of Allegiance, but can't due to being a Jehovah's Witness. She also mentions when she first learned to write and how she felt like she could create anything she wanted with this new skill. I am predicting that her "dreams" will become a more prominent part of the story in the second half of the book and become more specific to her main goal or aspiration. One this I don't feel the title gives any hint to is the time period of the book. The time period the book takes place in is an important aspect of the story. Being a young African American during the Civil Rights Movement leads to a much different story than if she had grown up during a different time period. I look forward to reading the second half of the story and learning more about how the title connects to the story.
